Lady Macbeth Drives The Ambition [Example] Student Post
2. Explain a character who drives the theme of the story, how do they change over the course of the text?
I think one character who drives the story in Macbeth was his wife, Lady Macbeth. After hearing the prophesy, Lady Macbeth encourages her husband, Macbeth, to kill King Duncan. She convinces her husband he must commit this heinous deed for them to reap the benefits of the throne in Scotland. The character changes over the text as the guilt of killing the king, hits her. After the death of the king, she becomes very strange and mad because of the torment that fills her mind. Later in the play she scrubs an invisible 'blood' stain in her dress aimlessly. Finally, Lady Macbeth is overcome with guilt to the point that she commits suicide. One can argue that Macbeth would not have went forward with his plan to kill the king without the encouragement of his wife; so, she drives the story forward a lot in this way. Along with this, Lady Macbeth changes because of her involvement in the murder of King Duncan.
[Example Comment] Interesting thoughts; I had not noticed what a big impact Lady Macbeth had on not only the story, but to her husband as well. I agree that she changes a lot during the story. In the beginning she is cold and numb to the situation, but towards the end she is very tormented by it. Great job!
